The main rule
At Issyk-Kul, water safety starts before entering the lake: use a permitted area, assess wind and waves, and keep children under continuous supervision. Kyrgyzstan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations and tourist police issue shore-side safety reminders and warn visitors about dangerous zones.
Before swimming
Do not enter the water when intoxicated, severely chilled or unwell. Learn where depth drops sharply and whether there are currents, rocks, boat lanes or a swimming restriction. Children must stay within arm’s reach of an adult; an inflatable ring is not supervision or a life jacket.
When wind or waves increase
Leave the water early. Do not try to wait out worsening conditions far from shore or send a child after an inflatable toy. On a boat or SUP, wear a life jacket, check conditions and keep a clear return point.
If something goes wrong
Call for help and dial 112 immediately. Do not enter deep water for a rescue if you cannot do so safely: find a flotation aid, involve other adults and keep the person in sight. Do not create a second casualty.
Review current notices before travelling and choose verified places and services. Rules posted at a specific beach always take priority over this general guide.
