About the city

Karakol — The Soul of Tien Shan

The heart of Issyk-Kul region, the gateway to great glaciers and peaks, as well as a unique crossroads of cultures and culinary traditions.

History and atmosphere of the city

Karakol was founded in 1869 as a military-administrative and trading post on the ancient caravan route. Thanks to its unique location in the valley at the foot of majestic mountains and proximity to Lake Issyk-Kul, the city quickly became an important cultural and research center of Central Asia.

Today Karakol combines the charm of old wooden streets, Dungan and Uyghur color, traditional Kyrgyz hospitality and the spirit of modern adventures. It is a world attraction for trekking lovers in summer and extreme ski freeride in winter.

Climate and seasons

The mild climate is influenced by the non-freezing Lake Issyk-Kul. Winters are snowy and comfortable (-5°C...-10°C), without strong winds. Summers are moderately warm (+20°C...+25°C), bringing coolness from the glaciers of Terskey Alatau, which is ideal for hiking.

How to get here

The city is located 400 km from Bishkek. You can get there by comfortable transfers, regular shuttle taxis or rented car (5-6 hours). In summer season, flights to Tamchi airport on the lake coast are also available.
